If a show includes a trans character, that character must be played by a trans performer, and there must be other people on the set and involved in the production process who are also trans. The way we manage this though, is by making sure there’s representation both on the screen and behind the scenes. The trans community is extremely diverse in backgrounds and experiences, so there can’t be any set guidelines for how a trans character should be expected to act. Of course, I think it’s important to recognize that there’s no one correct portrayal of a trans character. However, there has been a positive shift recently in film and TV shows that aim to uplift the trans community and tell the powerful stories of those within it. The film can also be hard to watch for trans people because it involves a graphic and tragic hate crime and can feel like it’s glorifying that violence. Even though the film and its cast won several awards including Golden Globes and an Oscar for Best Actress, the role of the transgender main character was played by Hillary Swank, a cisgender woman.
